Buyan Lakeside Villas — Lake Buyan, North Bali

Above the heat.
On the lake.

Five private villas on Lake Buyan, 1,300m above Bali.

Explore the villas

Most guests come to Bali and never make it this far north. The ones who do tend to wonder why they waited so long. The lake is still, the air is cool, and the highlands move at a pace that south Bali has long forgotten.

The Highland

At 1,300 metres, the air changes before you even step out of the car.

It's cooler, quieter, and carries the faint smell of wet earth and woodsmoke. The highlands of North Bali move at a different pace entirely. Here, mornings arrive slowly. Clouds drift through the valley below you. The stillness isn't empty — it has weight to it, the kind that makes you exhale properly for the first time in days.

Most guests who make it this far north say the same thing: they didn't expect Bali to feel like this. Cool enough for long sleeves at dusk. Quiet enough to hear the lake. Slow enough to actually stop.

The Lake

One of Bali's four sacred lakes. No motorised boats. No tourist traffic to speak of.

Lake Buyan was formed inside an ancient volcanic caldera and has been considered sacred by the Balinese for centuries. In the early morning, wooden fishing boats move through the low mist — small, quiet, unhurried — and the lake holds a stillness that feels genuinely rare in 2026.

A morning here doesn't ask anything of you. You wake to birdsong, maybe rain on the roof, maybe the soft movement of mist across the water. Breakfast arrives without urgency. At some point you realise you haven't checked your phone.

"Some places are worth the detour. Others quietly rearrange your sense of what a trip can feel like."

Around the Villas

The highlands have a way of filling your days without trying.

There is no shortage of things to do — but the pace here invites you to choose fewer of them, slowly. Below is what we think is worth your time.

Fishing on Lake Buyan

Lake Buyan sits steps from your door. If you want to spend a morning on it with a rod and a thermos of coffee, we can arrange that. The lake holds Tilapia and Carp. Equipment and bait included. No experience required.

Jungle

The Twin Lake Rainforest Track

A spiritual route through ancient jungle connecting Lake Buyan to Lake Tamblingan — roughly two to three hours with a local guide. The path passes hidden temples that most visitors to Bali will never find. Book a day ahead. IDR 1,200,000 for up to two people.

15 minutes away

Pura Ulun Danu Beratan

The floating temple on Lake Beratan — one of Bali's most photographed landmarks, and one of the few that earns it. Best seen early, before the light changes and the coaches arrive. Leave by 08:00.

10 minutes away

Handara Gate

The gate sits at the entrance of a championship golf course inside a dormant volcano crater. If you want the photograph without the crowd, the same early-morning rule applies.

30 minutes away

Banyumala Twin Waterfalls

A gentle hike through the jungle ends at twin waterfalls and natural pools. The kind of place that doesn't announce itself, and is better for it.

In your villa

Balinese Massage

A traditional 60-minute massage in the privacy of your own villa. The logical end to a day of walking, hiking, or simply being outside. IDR 370,000 net. Book through our staff.
